Abstract
Low financial resources create a vicious cycle for rural households in general, and those in the Bugorhe Grouping in particular, hindering their socioeconomic development. We addressed the issue of the contribution of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) to the socio-economic development of rural households through the provision of microloans in the Bugorhe Grouping. To this end, we conducted a survey using a questionnaire administered to 145 individuals over a period from May to December 2025 (eight months), with the general objective of determining the level of contribution of VSLAs to socio-economic development in the Bugorhe Grouping. Indeed, 100% of our respondents indicated that VSLAs contribute positively to the socio-economic development of rural households in the Bugorhe Grouping, because they enable their members to organize incomegenerating activities and promote their advancement within society. According to 68.96% of our respondents, the main difficulties encountered in VSLAs are: irregular deposit of shares, failure of some members to adhere to loan repayment schedules, and a lack of government support. According to 46.90% of these same respondents, strategies for the effective functioning of VSLAs include strengthening meetings, fostering solidarity among members, and preventing the misappropriation of member funds. Thus, according to the results of our survey, VSLA organization remains crucial in helping rural households address their problems through access to credit. These same results showed that despite the high interest rates charged by VSLAs, members prefer them to formal financial institutions because they find credit more readily available.
